VA Military Divorce Lawyer Michael Kevin Murphy

Mr. Murphy is a former U.S. Army officer who served with distinction in the Vietnam War having been awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Parachutist Wings, Vietnam Ranger Badge, Bronze Star Medal, eight Air Medals; his military units received the Valorous Unit Award , and Vietnam Gallantry Cross. And for over twenty-six years has served the divorce and family law needs of our nation's military and other government professionals and their spouses with his unique background and experience. Although his main office is in Fairfax VA, Mr. Murphy often associates with attorneys throughout the United States and is available to consult with other attorneys lawyers who need his experience in dealing with the family law needs of military professionals and civilians.

Mr. Murphy formerly served as an adjunct professor for the George Mason University School of Law in Arlington, Virginia during which he taught the techniques of negotiation, mediation, and arbitration.

  • Practice includes the management of legal issues implicated in distressed real estate such as “short sales”, loan modifications, foreclosure, loan avoidance, and loan assumptions.
  • Practices exclusively in the area of real estate, and has extensive experience negotiating and drafting purchase and sale agreements, commercial leases and work letters, joint venture agreements, loan documents, brokerage agreements, management agreements, and architectural service agreements.
  • A graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Law (J.D. 1995), and Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations (B.S. 1988). 
  • Ten years experience practicing as a commercial real estate attorney at large, international law firms, including Hogan & Hartson (McLean office), Goulston & Storrs (D.C. office), and Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal (Chicago office). 
  • Maintains specialized focus in commercial leasing. In 2003, Tom represented The Titan Corporation in its lease with Boston Properties for headquarters space at the Reston Town Center. This anchor tenant transaction was selected by the Washington Business Journal as the Best Suburban Office Lease of the year.
  • A veteran of the U.S. Army, Tom served as an officer from October 1988 until April 1992. Tom was awarded the Bronze Star while deployed with U.S. forces to Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield/Storm.
  • Licensed to practice law in Virginia and the District of Columbia.
  • Serves on the Pro Bono Law Committee of the Fairfax Bar Association.
  • Member of the Real Property Sections of the Virginia Bar Association and the Fairfax Bar Association.
